About . History . CIA at CMA

CIA at CMA

CIA was incorporated in 1882, 31 years before the 1913 founding of the Cleveland Museum of Art. For over 100 years, our institutions have enjoyed a dynamic and often collaborative relationship. Today we can celebrate many intriguing stories and a compelling diversity of accomplishments.

View a slideshow to explore 100+ works of art by CIA artists and designers in the art museum's collection. (The links appear under the heading "CIA at CMA.")

Below are a few highlights of our history together.

  • During 1905-1916, CIA hosted major art exhibitions in the galleries of its new Italianate school building (razed after the current Gund Building was erected).
  • From its founding, the Cleveland Museum of Art has actively collected the finest of regional artwork in a variety of media.
  • The annual “May Shows” of the Museum, especially between 1919 and 1958, supported regional art and craft with both awards and sales, thereby encouraging CIA-affiliated artists and designers to excel.
  • For many years, CMA also circulated traveling exhibitions of Cleveland art to other museums, these always featuring CIA-affiliated artists (and others from our region).
  • Then and now, both students and faculty—in studio and liberal arts—study the CMA collection firsthand.
  • Alumni and faculty have frequently taught in the CMA’s education programs or taken full-time positions at the museum.
