Martin Scorsese calls THE HAUNTING the scariest movie ever made!
Robert Wise's THE HAUNTING was proclaimed the scariest movie of all time by no less than Martin Scorsese. This hair-raising 1963 thriller follows a group of people who spend a few nights in an eerie old mansion (whose former residents have a history of insanity and death) to determine whether the house is haunted. Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson, and Russ Tamblyn star. See it in a 35mm scope print on Saturday or Sunday. Watch the original trailer here.
Girl lives her whole life in one day in singular Brazilian fable SOUTHWEST
Eduardo Nunes' SOUTHWEST is a dreamy, deliberately paced b&w Brazilian fairy tale that is set in an impoverished fishing village. The movie, which evokes the cinematic worlds of Terrence Malick and Michael Haneke, tells of a woman (who may be a witch) who delivers a baby girl, but cannot save the mother. This singular newborn, Clarice, lives her whole life (childhood, adulthood, old age) during one 24-hour period that, to her fellow villagers, is just a day like any other. Shot in an extremely wide aspect ratio (3.66: 1—one and a half times the width of 'scope), this visually resplendent movie demands to be seen on the big screen. Variety calls SOUTHWEST "a magnificent fable" and says it "has the feel of a tropical Tarkovsky or a Béla Tarr movie with better weather." Catch its exclusive Cleveland premiere on Friday or Sunday. This film is co-presented by the Global Film Initiative and is part of the Global Lens 2013 film series. Here's the trailer.
Our fine feathered friends turn fiendish in Hitchcock's horrifying THE BIRDS
Thousands of birds descend upon a California coastal town for no apparent reason, attacking and terrorizing the residents, in Alfred Hitchcock’s THE BIRDS. This 1963 follow-up to PSYCHO is one of Hitch's strangest and most unsettling thrillers. Tippi Hedren and Rod Taylor star. See it in a 35mm color print from the Universal Pictures studio archive on Saturday or Sunday. Hitchcock himself stars in the amusing, original trailer, which you can watch here.
Hayao Miyazaki series continues with Oscar-winning fantasy SPIRITED AWAY
Winner of the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, and Japan’s all-time box office champ at the time of its release (surpassing TITANIC), SPIRITED AWAY is arguably Hayao Miyazaki’s most dazzling and imaginative masterpiece. This 2001 film tells of a 10-year-old girl who is transported to a fantastic spirit realm after her parents are turned into pigs. There she goes to work for a witch in order to reverse the spell. On Friday and Saturday we will show a 35mm print of the film's English version, which features voices by Suzanne Pleshette, David Ogden Stiers, Michael Chiklis, et al. Print this email and present it at the box office and see SPIRITED AWAY for only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out)
