GEBO AND THE SHADOW is latest work by 105-year-old master Manoel de Oliveira GEBO AND THE SHADOW is the most recent feature from 105-year-old Portuguese master Manoel de Oliveira. Undistributed in the U.S. (we will show a 35mm print imported from Europe), the movie features a top-notch cast of European art-film stars (Michel Lonsdale, Claudia Cardinale, Jeanne Moreau) and Oliveira regulars (Leonor Silveira, Luís Miguel Cintra, Ricardo Trépa). Based on a play by Raul Brandão, the film is a claustrophobic drama, set during the late 19th century, in which an elderly couple anxiously awaits the return of their elusive, long-absent son, who’s been seen in town. The New Yorker calls Gebo and the Shadow “an exquisite yet anguished spectacle, a grand piece of cinematic chamber music for a cast of mighty soloists.” Don't miss the film's exclusive Cleveland premiere on Saturday at 5:00 pm. (We're the only U.S. city outside of New York showing it .) Special admission is $12; members & CIA I.D. holders $9; age 25 & under $7; no passes, twofers, or radio winners. Here's the trailer.

Italian HONEY is impressive first film from actress Valeria Golino HONEY, the highly acclaimed first feature directed by veteran Italian actress Valeria Golino (Rain Man), shows her to be a filmmaker of sensitivity and style. An introspective woman who advocates euthanasia for terminally ill patients (and secretly facilitates assisted suicides) has a crisis of conscience when she supplies life-ending drugs to a cynical, suicidal man who turns out to be perfectly healthy. The Hollywood Reporter calls Honey "an impressively mature directing debut.” Catch its exclusive Cleveland premiere on Friday or Saturday. Watch the trailer here.

Comedy CHEAP THRILLS explores how low people will go -- for money Winner of both the Audience Award and the prize for Best First Feature at SXSW 2013, CHEAP THRILLS is an appallingly hilarious black comedy that examines how low people will go for money. An auto mechanic and new father (Pat Healy) is laid off the same day he finds an eviction notice on his front door. He finds salvation at a local bar in the form of a bored, wealthy couple who are willing to pay a lot of cash if he will make good on a series of outrageous, escalating dares. David Koechner (Anchorman) co-stars. According to The New York Times, "This is dark comedy indeed... and it works deliciously.” Adults can see it Friday at 9:25 pm. Here's the outrageous trailer.

Shirley Clarke's 1961 THE CONNECTION is jazz / junkie indie classic! THE CONNECTION is Shirley Clarke's boundary-shattering 1961 Beat-era classic. Based on Jack Gelber's off-Broadway play, the film focuses on eight junkies waiting for their fix in a NYC loft apartment. Many pass the time playing jazz. A preppy young filmmaker (William Redfield) agrees to pay for the drugs if they will let him film the "connection." This taboo-breaking indie movie, which has a 92% "fresh" rating on RottenTomatoes, was initially banned in New York until the state's Supreme Court OK’ed its release. See it in a new, restored 35mm print on Friday or Saturday. Watch the trailer here.

Jane Adams plays aging L.A. actress in comedy ALL THE LIGHT IN THE SKY Joe Swanberg's new movie, ALL THE LIGHT IS THE SKY, is one of the most acclaimed works by this prolific indie filmmaker. Jane Adams (Hung, Happiness) plays an aging L.A. actress who is keenly aware that the roles she can play are drying up. Her mid-life crisis is exacerbated when her 25-year-old niece turns up at her Malibu beach house and announces that she also wants to act in movies. Watch the funny trailer and then catch this movie's Cleveland premiere on Thursday at 6:30 pm.

IT FELT LIKE LOVE is a touching, true portrait of a teen's budding sexuality IT FELT LIKE LOVE tells of a lonely 14-year-old girl who longs to be sexually experienced like her slightly older best friend. She sets her sights on an older, thuggish college boy who "will sleep with anyone." Eliza Hittman's highly acclaimed debut feature, a rare coming-of-age story from a female point of view, "is brilliantly, brutally tactile," according to The Village Voice. The L.A. Times observes that "rarely has the zone between girlhood and womanhood been captured with such urgent honesty." Don't miss the Cleveland premiere of It Felt Like Love on Thursday at 8:10 pm. Print this email and present it at the box office and pay only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Watch the film's trailer here.
