Chile | 2012 | Pablo Larrain

No

Gael García Bernal stars in this Chilean movie that was one of the five nominees for last year's Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. (It opened at the Cedar Lee during the run of the Cleveland Int'l Film Festival, so many moviegoers missed it.) Bernal plays a hotshot advertising man who joins the campaign to oust Chilean dictator General Augusto Pinochet, after 15 years in office, during a constitutionally mandated 1988 referendum. His innovative, irreverent approach, which incorporates the latest marketing strategies, provokes scorn from both camps and subterfuge from the right. Director Pablo Larrain shot No on retro 3/4" U-matic videotape to duplicate the look of 1980s Chilean television.
