Apps For Apes

Zoos are joining forces to bring iPads to orangutans to enrich their quality of life while in captivity. Like humans, orangutans show interest in using the iPads whether it is to watch video clips of themselves or painting with the doodling apps. It stimulates them and gives them options during the day to keep their minds active while not in their natural habitat. Orangutans are capable of a much a higher level of intelligence than other mammals and can become depressed if their brains don’t get a good workout. That is why zoos are incorporating the Apps for Apes program and asking for gently used iPads to be given as donations.

The 3 Goals of Apps for Apes

1) To provide stimulating enrichment & immediate gratification for the orangutans using iPads

2) To raise awareness among zoo visitors of the critical need to protect orangutans in the wild

3) To promote the conservation efforts of Orangutan Outreach
