The Animator’s Survival Kit, by Richard Williams and developed by Faber and Faber, is all about how animation works! Williams studied animation his entire life and decided to write a book on DIY animation. He gathered all of the old school animators that he could, and before the end of their lives, he asked them about all of their tips and tricks. He re-learned the art of animation through his forties, fifties, and part of his sixties in order to get information for his book. Follow Williams through over forty years of animation experience and enjoy 17 chapters covering everything from timing to directing. Trying to animate a person to walking is a pretty involved process, there are a lot of aspects to consider like timing of steps and the way the head and hair bounces. I took advantage of the sample version of The Animator’s Survival Kit that Williams provides for his customers. In the sample version there are free chapters with fun little drawings that illustrate the text instructions very well. Interspersed within the chapters are short animations that pertain to what you just read. He presents a rule, explains it, demonstrates it, and moves on. Richard William’s Animator’s Survival Kit is $34.99 in the iTunes store or you can buy the original book for $23.99. He also sells a 16 disk DVD collection for $956.00 if you would rather listen to his instruction.

Thesis Statements – Get advice from the Writing Center!

This handout describes what a thesis statement is, how thesis statements work in your writing, and how you can discover or refine one for each of your BFA papers.

Introduction

Writing in college often takes the form of persuasion—convincing others that you have an interesting, logical point of view on the subject you are studying. Persuasion is a skill you practice regularly in your daily life. You persuade your roommate to clean up, your parents to let you borrow the car, your friend to vote for your favorite candidate or policy. In college, course assignments often ask you to make a persuasive case in writing. You are asked to convince your reader of your point of view. This form of persuasion, often called academic argument, follows a predictable pattern in writing. After a brief introduction of your topic, you state your point of view on the topic directly and often in one sentence. This sentence is the thesis statement, and it serves as a summary of the argument you’ll make in the rest of your paper.

What is a thesis statement? A thesis statement:

tells the reader how you will interpret the significance of the subject matter under discussion.

is a road map for the paper; in other words, it tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the paper.

directly answers the question asked of you. A thesis is an interpretation of a question or subject, not the subject itself. The subject, or topic, of an essay might be World War II or Moby Dick; a thesis must then offer a way to understand the war or the novel.

makes a claim that others might dispute.

is usually a single sentence somewhere in your first paragraph that presents your argument to the reader. The rest of the paper, the body of the essay, gathers and organizes evidence that will persuade the reader of the logic of your interpretation.

If your assignment asks you to take a position or develop a claim about a subject, you may need to convey that position or claim in a thesis statement near the beginning of your draft. The assignment may not explicitly state that you need a thesis statement because your instructor may assume you will include one. When in doubt, ask your instructor if the assignment requires a thesis statement. When an assignment asks you to analyze, to interpret, to compare and contrast, to demonstrate cause and effect, or to take a stand on an issue, it is likely that you are being asked to develop a thesis and to support it persuasively.

How do I get a thesis?
A thesis is the result of a thinking process. Before you develop an argument on any topic, you have to collect and organize evidence, look for possible relationships between known facts (such as surprising contrasts or similarities), and think about the significance of these relationships. Once you do this thinking, you will probably have a “working thesis,” a basic or main idea, an argument that you think you can support with evidence but that may need adjustment along the way.

How do I know if my thesis is strong?
If there’s time, run it by your instructor or make an appointment at the Writing Center to get some feedback. Even if you do not have time to get advice elsewhere, you can do some thesis evaluation of your own. When reviewing your first draft and its working thesis, ask yourself the following:

Do I answer the question? Re-reading the question prompt after constructing a working thesis can help you fix an argument that misses the focus of the question.

Have I taken a position that others might challenge or oppose? If your thesis simply states facts that no one would, or even could, disagree with, it’s possible that you are simply providing a summary, rather than making an argument.

Is my thesis statement specific enough? Thesis statements that are too vague often do not have a strong argument. If your thesis contains words like “good” or “successful,” see if you could be more specific: why is something “good”; what specifically makes something “successful”?

Does my thesis pass the “So what?” test? If a reader’s first response is, “So what?” then you need to clarify, to forge a relationship, or to connect to a larger issue.

Does my essay support my thesis specifically and without wandering? If your thesis and the body of your essay do not seem to go together, one of them has to change. It’s o.k. to change your working thesis to reflect things you have figured out in the course of writing your paper. Remember, always reassess and revise your writing as necessary.

Does my thesis pass the “how and why?” test? If a reader’s first response is “how?” or “why?” your thesis may be too open-ended and lack guidance for the reader. See what you can add to give the reader a better take on your position right from the beginning.

Distressed FX, by We Are Here, is a photo editing application! Use one of Distressed FX many filters to enhance the look of your image. I am a fan of the “finch” color overlay with a little touch of “Karma” to bring out the dark values in an image and give it an orange sepia tint. Distressed FX also has a way to control the brightness/contrast, saturation, sharpness, and how much each of the filters can affect the image. I just crank them all the way up! I like that super distressed look, but subtle filters are an option. After you are finished working with your image, you can share your work through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Dropbox, e-mail, or save to the camera roll. To get started working with Distressed Fx for $0.99, visit the iTunes store!

Hueless, from Curious Satellite, is a wonderful camera for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod that takes black and white photos with just a tap of your finger! Hueless has been designed to make taking multiple black and white photos simple and easy. Rather than editing a collection of photos one by one or running actions in photoshop, Hueless allows you to set up the camera before you ever take a single photo. When there are hundreds of photos and each one needs the same thing, I would definitely appreciate having a camera that can take photos with a saved setting! Hueless not only allows you to set presets, but also provides you with a database where you can post your camera settings for other Hueless users to see and try out. You can also borrow settings from other Hueless users as well. Hueless provides you with an assortment of six color overlays in order to give your images a mood. Hueless is $1.99 in the iTunes store!

I think I may have found my next iPad case! When I first received my iPad, it took me two months to decide on a case. When it comes to the perfect case, I am very particular. My iPad goes everywhere with me so it has to be tough, but can’t look bulky, has to be the right kind of material, has to wake up my iPad when I open it, AND double as a stand for watching movies. That’s not asking a lot, right? After digging through many online, I decided on the Speck FitFolio case. The FitFolio treated me and my iPad well for the past few months and has taken what I can dish out to it, except for claw marks from my jealous cat when I spend time on my iPad instead of petting her. When they invent a claw proof case I’m on it. I came across the Logitech FabricSkin Keyboard Folio and my picky list of everything I needed was fulfilled just looking at it. I’ve never tried out an iPad case with the built-in keyboard, but with a case like this and 3 months of battery life I’m sure it’ll grow on me.

Some of the things I love:

Liquid Resistant

Doesn’t take away from functionality or sleekness of iPad

Fun colors to choose from

Magnetic stand

Wakes up iPad when opened

3 months of battery life and rechargeable

I.D.Wood, made by Double Dog Studios, is a novice woodworker’s best friend! Hundreds of full screen display wood samples are at your finger tips. Categorized by rarity and hardness or softness, I.D.Wood can easily guide you to the perfect choice. I always have a hard time deciding what wood could work well with my projects. I never seem to know the names of any brands or even what color of wood I want. I.D.Wood was designed to help solve this problem. Not only does it help me with brands and colors but it also gives me locations where I could buy wood by a specific type, hardness, common uses, sustainability, and more. I am actually working on building a few wine boxes for some ceramic bottles that I made in class and this application has been helpful to work with. I.D. Wood is available for $4.99 in the iTunes store!

Drew Dudley, educated at Mount Allison University and Founder of Nuance Leadership Development Services, Inc, is a well known keynote speaker who tends to highlight the little moments in life that inspire smiles, happiness, the highlight of someone’s day, or even the split second moment when life is forever changed because of an act of kindness from another person. Keynote is a wonderful program to build presentations in, I really enjoy the workflow and the huge variety of export options within the program. Drew uses this program to help him explain what he refers to as “lollipop moments!” He takes a lighter view on one of the most important parts of leading a good life in society today. He capitalizes on the idea of having someone’s back and doing good for others. Drew Dudley has one of my personal favorite TEDx lectures right under Sir. Ken Robinson’s, “do public schools kill creativity.” I encourage you to take the time to watch this quick TED talk and listen to what he has to share with you!

Amanda F*cking Palmer, lead pianist and singer of Amanda Palmer and the Grand Theft Orchestra, rose to fame as co-punk cabaret member of The Dresden Dolls. She has been involved in a plethora of visual, musical, and theatrical collaborations too complex and wonderful to describe in just one article! Ukulele-slaying, body positive, radical, and brutally honest, Amanda is a fascinating individual whose conviction and generosity mark her as my all time favorite artist. A multifaceted inspiration, perhaps one of her most admirable feats was her Kickstarter triumph – Palmer crowd-funded her new tour, art book, and album, raising over $1,000,000 by reaching out to her fans. A master of social media, Amanda utilizes Twitter and countless other digital outlets to connect to her fans and collaborate with artists, offering her music for free. Amanda recently gave a TED talk detailing the start of her career, her Kickstarter campaign, and The Art of Asking:
