Lunch On Fridays: Julie Schenkelberg

Add event to my calendar

Spend a lunch hour learning about the latest in art and design during these Friday lectures. Each lecture features a variety of artists and designers from around the world, including CIA faculty and visiting artists.

Julie Schenkelberg lives and works in Brooklyn and is represented at Asya Geisberg Gallery located in Manhattan. Schenkelberg received a BA in art history at the College of Wooster, and an MFA at the School of Visual Arts, NY

Inspired by her upbringing in post-industrial Cleveland, Ohio, Schenkelberg uses vintage domestic items, combined with industrial discarded materials to interpret personal history. Her materials break and blend into one another, blurring their original intent, creating a new disjointed vision about the residual physiological dysfunction of familial space. Her installations and sculptures, influenced by her knowledge of theatrical painting and set building, explore how the history of these objects are mishandled into a new exquisite form, through faulty interpretation or missing information. She re-interprets her chosen objects, much like interpreting a tattered manual with missing pages.

This event is free and open to the public. Pizza and beverages will be provided. Click here to read more about the Lunch on Fridays series.

Cleveland Institute of Art is supported in part by the residents of Cuyahoga County through a public grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.
