The delight was obvious on the faces of guests as CIA students presented NEO: A Runway Show on April 22. Students modeled wearables – in the form of accessories, design, and conceptual art – before nearly 200 enthusiastic audience members in CIA’s Reinberger Galleries.
The runway show has become a perennial crowd pleaser at CIA, highlighting some of the most innovative works of art and design created by students from several different majors. Playing up the double meaning of NEO (the popular abbreviation for Northeast Ohio and the Greek prefix for new), the event highlights new and novel materials and technologies, including digital design and 3D printing.
Students in the Fashion Jewelry Accessories course orchestrated the show and served as the Runway Show Committee members. The committee posted a call for entries, opening the show to CIA students from all majors.
Award winners for the evening were Sculpture major Graham Baldwin, Best of Show; Jewelry + Metals major Hongzhe Ma, Best Accessory; and art education major Raisa E. Cabrera, Best Material and Technology. Runway Show Committee members are: Annelise Sung Eun, Brittany Salay, Keaton Barbian, Craig Waterman, Raisa E. Cabrera, Graham Baldwin, Hongzhe Ma, Xiao Yang, and Anamaria Hall. Matthew Hollern, professor of Jewelry + Metals, served as committee advisor.
In his opening remarks, Hollern thanked the following for their assistance: staff members Richard Sarian ’86, Nicole Fansler, Debra Lee Meese ’96, Tom Hamilton, Bruce Checefsky, and Nikki Woods ’12; and CIA alumnae Ariel Gochberg ’12, and Pamela Argentieri ’87.
