The Charles E. Burchfield '16 Society

The Charles E. Burchfield ’16 Society was created in 1987 to recognize those special donors who generously give a gift of $1,000 or more to the Cleveland
Institute of Art’s Annual Fund.

Charles E. Burchfield (1893–1967), was born in Ashtabula, Ohio, and studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art (then known as the Cleveland School of Art).

His paintings, predominantly in watercolor, fall into three periods: from 1916 to the early 1920s, poetic evocations of nature; from the early 1920s to the early 1940s,bold, somber landscapes and urban scenes; and after 1943, a return to lyric expressions of nature, painted with a heightened sense of emotion.

The Burchfield Penney Museum is dedicated to the art and vision of Charles E. Burchfield.
