How-to guide by Timothy Callaghan '99 features works by five CIA grads.
Cleveland Institute of Art graduate and former adjunct faculty member Timothy Callaghan has written an instructional book on observational painting that encourages readers to paint the scenes of their everyday life.
Titled One Painting a Day, the guide was published by Quarry Books and features images of paintings by Callaghan as well as CIA graduates Matthew Johnson ’98, Libby Black ’99, William Newhouse ’99, Cecilia Phillips ’05, and Harris Johnson ’09.
The book focuses on still life, landscape, and portraiture in 42 different daily exercises. According to a review on Amazon.com, “You will find suggestions on technique, approach, and materials for each day, while the ‘weekly lessons’ explore a format or a rhythm for creating content, inspiring you to make the ordinary extraordinary as you create from every day experience.”
Plain Dealer art critic Steven Litt called the book “Absolutely delightful… readable, approachable and highly enticing.”
In 2012, Quarry Books published an art guide by long-time CIA instructor Dan Tranberg titled Acrylic Fusion: Experimenting with Alternative Methods for Painting, Collage and Mixed Media.
