Transferring to CIA: One student's experience

Josette Galiano, a senior majoring in Industrial Design, transferred to CIA from a neighboring university and never looked back. She describes her transformative experience.

Transferring to CIA: One student's experience
  1. What did CIA offer that your previous college didn't?

I began my journey at Case Western Reserve University studying Cognitive Science. I was always intrigued by the notion of following my passion and pursuing the study of art and design. I made the decision to take the leap and transferred to CIA with the intent of utilizing a behavioral science perspective to approach the design of systems and services. CIA offered the opportunity for intense personal exploration and the application of studying human interactions with seemingly limitless boundaries. Through my experience at CIA, the manner in which I view the surrounding world has been forever changed. CIA has provided a level of analytical awareness of the subtleties that exist within experience and it has afforded me the mentality to always strive for massive change and positive impact.

  2. Did you consider any other colleges of art and design?

I considered other colleges of art and design; however, I was drawn to the collaborative nature between CIA and CWRU. I am fascinated by gaining a pluralistic view in order to most effectively seek and solve problems. CIA is situated within a highly saturated cultural context and this has allowed for a rigorous exploration beyond its walls and into the community.

  3. Did you find the faculty and staff helpful as you made the transition to CIA?

Every faculty member that I had the pleasure of interacting with during my transition to CIA offered an unexpected level of genuine concern to my journey and a deeply devoted passion to personal exploration and fulfillment was evident. I can honestly say it was the faculty that drew me to this institution. During my Foundation year, I was exposed to and had the opportunity to interact with a highly diverse group of distinguished artists and designers. Upon reconnecting with them my senior year, it is so meaningful to realize that they remember me and my specific journey. I hope to maintain contact with them far beyond my time at CIA.

  4. What was it like adjusting to the studio in your major?

Interacting within the studio environment was a tremendous experience completely new and different compared to sitting in a lecture hall with 300 other students. You are a face in the crowd at some liberal arts universities. At CIA you are given a space to call your own, to plaster it with research and post-its and inspiration; it is a reflection of you as an artist or designer. It is your own individual environment that captures the continuous evolution of your process. Being situated within a highly collaborative studio environment allows for the constant exchange of thoughts and ideas. My work is stronger and I appreciate the challenge of constructive criticism, partially due to the dynamic nature of the environment, which I have grown so fond of.

  5. Looking back, was this a good move for you?

CIA is undoubtedly the right place for me. The connections that I have made both personally and professionally have immensely shaped who I am as a person, and I am grateful for the challenges embedded in this process.
