New film studies prof helps students appreciate film as art form

Erica Levin joined Liberal Arts faculty in fall 2014

Assistant Professor Erica Levin couldn’t have known in her first semester as a college student that a spur-of-the-moment decision to take a course on Japanese cinema would set her on a path toward a career in film studies. Yet, for the newly arrived Liberal Arts faculty member, that first film class was a game changer.

“The course opened my eyes to the complex ways modernization had shaped everyday life in Japan,” Levin says. “For the first time, I began to understand cinema’s intimate relationship with history and social change. From that moment on, I was hooked.”
